Shiny new toys
Posted by Jenna on Sep 5, 2008 in blog | 7 commentsAngela Bendetti has a post about wanting the Shiny New Idea Joy, and whoo boy, do I hear that.
On the one hand, I have ideas for at least three more novels about these boys—Ben and Jamie have one more story to tell, for instance—but at the same time I’m chafing a bit at being in the same universe with the same basic cast for another three+ years.
This is why I like the short stuff, I think, where I can be experimental. Writing Diamond was fun because it was basically an ancient-history-nerdgasm; writing the Four of Cups was fun because the POV character is something of an asshole, not my usual choice in a POV character, and writing about Vegas is almost as much fun as being there.
Still, there are vague ideas of other things and people floating around in the old noggin. I want to make use of the research I’ve been doing for the movie for other things than just the movie, for one; and I have a less vague idea of something with vampires in a more traditional manner than most vampire stories currently around. My first vampire was Dracula and I love a good horror story: I’m itching to try my hand at one.
And my point is . . . I have no point. Just that the San Francisco novels will have their run and then I’ll move on, I suppose. Some of them may come out through Torquere’s shorter lines. We’ll see. Sometimes I get inspired for many more words than I originally planned.
Story of my life: “We’ll see.”

Yep, that’s it exactly. More or less. [wry smile] I have dozens of WIPs, as usual, things I’m partway through to one extent or another, but I also have ideas for a bunch of bright, shiny new things that I’d really love to be working on. I love the old settings and characters too, but– but– but–! [laugh/headdesk]
Right now I have two possibilities for the Halloween story. One is a cool new idea in search of a plot (i.e., it’s a neat idea but there’s no conflict) and the other is set in the same urban fantasy universe as my last Halloween Sip (and the Holiday Advent story as well), although with new characters. I have a feeling the second one is going to win at this point, but the lure of the New and Shiny will always be strong.

Well, there were spaces in between paragraphs when I typed that.
Angie, squinting
I think you have to do two Returns to get paragraphs. I’m not really sure—Wordpress is sometimes a strange and puzzling creature. (Or it just depends on the comment style in the theme stylesheet.)
Idea in search of a plot! I know that feeling well.
I did use two Returns! Maybe it takes three…? LOL! Let’s try.
Angie
Aha! Three it is. Good grief…. [bemused smile]

I think it’s a hiccup in the comment styling in the theme. I’ll mess with it a bit and see what I can do.
Good for people to know.
